The Answer, Before Anything Else

A lot of men spend years assuming they are doing gay wrong. They like what they like, they avoid what they do not, and they decide the problem is them. Then they hear one word and the whole thing rearranges.

So what is a side? Someone who does not center anal penetration and finds sex in everything else. The shorthand is everything but butt, and it is accurate enough to repeat. A side is not a bottom in denial, not asexual, and not a person with less desire.

Dr. Joe Kort, a sex and relationship therapist, coined the term in 2013. The word also names a side of a triangle and the Christian labels for how churches treat same-sex relationships. We will untangle both below.

The Definition: Sex Without Penetration at the Center

What is a side, precisely? Someone who does not enjoy or pursue anal penetration in either role, and who finds sex in everything else.

The list runs long: kissing, oral sex, rimming, mutual masturbation, body contact, and every kind of friction two bodies can make. The word says nothing about which genders you are attracted to. It describes what you do, not who you want.

The term comes from Dr. Joe Kort, a sex and relationship therapist. On April 16, 2013, he published an essay called “Guys on the Side: Looking Beyond Gay Tops and Bottoms.” The word arrived as a joke.

Kort told friends he had never had anal sex and did not enjoy it. They said, then you are neither a top nor a bottom. He said he was a side, picturing a box, and everyone laughed. Later he wondered why it could not be a real word.

Kort is a side himself, which is part of why the word landed. The definition has widened since.

His first version covered only people who never have or enjoy penetration. Men used it more loosely, and the label followed. That is where side vers comes from: someone who mostly sides and occasionally tops or bottoms.

What a side is not matters too, because each misreading has a reason. The bottom-in-denial reading arrives most often. Asexuality comes second.

A side is not working through a fetish, a phase, or a punishment. And a side is not a verdict on anyone else’s sex life.

Foreplay and masturbation are still sex. They are not the warm-up for the real thing. The assumption that penetration is required is what needed correcting, not the person who skips it.

Top, Bottom, Vers, Side: The Four Roles Side by Side

The vocabulary treats this as a three-way choice. It has been four since 2022, and the fourth is not a variation on the others.

Top

Bottom

Vers

Side

What it describes

The insertive partner

The receptive partner

Someone who does both

Someone who does not center penetration

What they do

Penetrates

Receives

Moves between the two

Kissing, oral, rimming, mutual masturbation, friction

What they look for

A receptive partner

An insertive partner

Flexibility either way

A partner who does not need penetration

What it does not tell you

Whether they will bottom sometimes

Whether they will top sometimes

Which way they lean tonight

Whether they top or bottom at all

A position is what you do in one encounter. A role is the identity you carry into dating. Side is a role and a practice, not a position you take during a single act, even though that is the drop-down it sits in.

People call it a position because of where the field lives, not because the word means that. A drop-down is not a definition.

Two contractions trip people up, and both answer the question with a qualifier instead of a no. What is a side bottom? Loose shorthand for someone who leans receptive but does not center penetration. Side vers is Kort’s own term for someone who mostly sides and occasionally tops or bottoms.

The original definition was narrower than both, covering only people who never have or enjoy penetration. It widened because men used it that way, and that is how a language grows.

None of the four boxes is permanent. Some people side only while single, or only with men. Some top for a decade and then stop. Vers people know this best, since most were something else first.

The label describes where you are now, not a sentence you serve.

Which Side Do You Mean? Triangles, Theology, and the Term You’re Looking For

“Side” is a small word doing several jobs. It names an edge of a triangle, a set of church positions, and a way of having sex. Here is how to tell them apart.

The geometry sense names one of the three edges that enclose a triangle. The theology sense comes from Christian writers who label churches by how they treat same-sex relationships: Side A affirms them, Side B welcomes the person without blessing the relationship, while Side X and Side Y take harder lines.

The third meaning is the one this page covers. In gay and queer terms, what is a side? A person who does not center anal penetration and finds sex in everything else: kissing, oral sex, rimming, mutual masturbation and other friction. That is the term you are looking for, and it has nothing to do with angles or congregations.

What Sides Actually Do: Outercourse, Frottage, and the Rest

What is a side in bed? A vocabulary most people were never handed, and half the reason the word goes unrecognized is that nobody named what they were already doing.

Outercourse is the umbrella term: sex without penetration of the mouth, the vagina or the anus. The word entered use in 1986 and picked up speed around 2017, when people began using it to talk about the orgasm gap.

The repertoire:

Kissing and making out, which counts as sex and is the act partners report most.

Oral sex, in whatever direction.

Rimming, or oral contact with the anus.

Mutual masturbation and handjobs, alone together.

Frottage, the umbrella word for erotic body-to-genital rubbing, and frot, the gay-male form of it: penis against penis, usually front to front. Frot was coined in the 1970s. It is not frotteurism, which names non-consensual rubbing.

Intercrural sex, thrusting between a partner’s thighs.

Dry humping, with or without clothes.

Massage, wrestling, body contact, and anything else two people agree on.

There is no single side script. Sofie Roos, a sexologist, puts it bluntly: side sex is not milder than anal, and plenty of sides have acts they are not into. Some enjoy finger-based anal stimulation and nothing further. The label tells you what a person does not center, not what they want.

One safety note, warmly meant. Non-penetrative sex is lower risk, not no risk. Penis-to-penis rubbing carries little to no HIV risk, while herpes, HPV, syphilis and molluscum contagiosum travel skin to skin. Keep up regular screening, use barriers where they apply, and find a clinician who is comfortable with what you do and do not do.

How Common Is This? What the Research Shows

Sides get described as rare. The number behind that claim shows the opposite once you know what was measured.

In November 2011, the Journal of Sexual Medicine published a study by Rosenberger and colleagues: “Sexual Behaviors and Situational Characteristics of Most Recent Male-Partnered Sexual Event among Gay and Bisexually Identified Men in the United States.” It surveyed 24,787 gay and bisexual men aged 18 to 87, from all 50 states and DC.

At their most recent sexual event, 37.2 percent had anal intercourse. Among men aged 18 to 24, the figure was 42.7 percent. Both are fewer than half. Receptive and insertive split roughly 35.5 and 33.8, which explains the two figures.

What they did instead: kissing came first at 74.5 percent, then oral sex at 72.7 and partnered masturbation at 68.4. More than six in ten reported five to nine separate acts that night. Gay-identified men described 1,308 unique combinations of behavior, and the most common was shared by 16 percent. Bisexual-identified men described 617 of their own.

So what is a side in these numbers? Not an identity count. This counted what happened one night, not who anyone is.

A top or a bottom can skip anal for an evening. If anal appears at 37.2 percent of these events, the other 63 percent sits in side territory.

Sample limits: mean age 39.2, 84.6 percent white, 79.9 percent homosexual. Read it as evidence about behavior, not identity.

In 2023, Angelos Bollas, a researcher at Dublin City University, argued in the Journal of Homosexuality that anti-side stigma is societal, not personal. A 2026 study in the Journal of Sex Research by Cao and Ding, based on 15 interviews with gay men in China, frames Side as bodily comfort and psychological safety.

The Pushback Sides Face: Pressure, Put-Downs, and Consent

Recognition lands faster than statistics.

Sides get called boring, virgins, trauma survivors. They get told to give it ten minutes and they will change their tune. They get told what they do is not real sex, and asked how they expect to please a man without anal. That list is Dr. Joe Kort’s, and he notes much of it comes from inside the gay community.

Dr. Michael Grey, a licensed marriage and family therapist, says it without softening: “There is still a lot of stigma about being a side and a lot of rejection from the gay community.”

Calum McSwiggan spent seven years having sex he did not want, because he believed being gay required it. He heard that the sex he has is not real sex, that he has not found the right top or bottom, and that he will never find a compatible man unless he forces himself to enjoy anal.

Jay, 38, describes the quieter version, where nothing dramatic happens and the pool looks empty. He thought his tastes eliminated him from finding anyone, and says sides keep quiet about the preference out of embarrassment. Badal, 32, names the fear underneath: naming it publicly risks further marginalizing you inside a community that is already marginalized. Lucien Samaha, 64, gives the outcome in one sentence. “You’re made to feel like you’re less than a full gay person.”

Jay also describes what it cost him: bottoming hurt every single time, and he never experienced anything close to what he saw in porn. Bollas found that the only notable depiction of a side on screen, Henry in the 2015 series Cucumber, is a marginalizing one, and his participants challenge the absence of positive representation in popular culture.

Pressure has a shape: asking until someone gives in, saying you would do it if you loved them, calling a no insecurity, drinking to get through it. A survey of men at an Atlanta gay pride festival found about one in five reported unwanted anal intercourse after threats to leave, threats of force, or actual force. Indrajeet Ghorpade, who founded the YesweexistIndia page, says the pressure pushes men into painful sex, because only penetration counts.

Kort calls this a second closet. Men come out, find pride, then go back into a closet for being a side. He calls it coming out erotically a second time.

The pressure does not land evenly. Lou, 33, links his distance from penetration to being oversexualized and stereotyped, and says dropping it removed a lot of performance anxiety.

Most sides are live-and-let-live about other people’s sex. The objection is to pressure, not to anal. McSwiggan found objections rare in practice, only a couple of real dealbreakers, with several partners admitting they were never that into anal.

Some thoughtful people think the label names a problem that does not exist. What is a side, they ask, and does it need a word at all? A name does not create a preference. It changes what a person can ask for, which is why the word now turns up in an app field and in research.

Side Is Not Only a Gay Man’s Word

Someone rewrote the definition in public. What is a side beyond gay men?

Drag queen Kerri Colby learned the term and posted, “I was today years old when I learned that I don’t identify as a top or a bottom,” then added, “But as a side.” She edited the definition itself, swapping “a homosexual male” for “a person.” Kort notes people of all genders and sexual orientations have since adopted it.

One thing needs saying for bisexual readers. The label describes acts, not attractions. A bi man can be a side, and that says nothing about whether he dates women. Bisexual-identified participants in the 2011 study reported 617 unique combinations of behavior.

Queer women have their own vocabulary for this. Gouinage, from reclaimed French slang, names sex without penetration and centers touch, smell, taste, skin and time.

Sometimes this is about a body, not a mood. Trans men and nonbinary people often describe dysphoria as sharper around receiving than giving, and hormone changes can make some penetration painful. Boundaries around specific acts are practical, not a hang-up.

The gender and sexuality educator Clark W Hamil describes people who find penetration “unpleasurable, deeply upsetting and emotionally, even physically, damaging.” Long-term testosterone can cause vaginal atrophy. Long-term estrogen can affect phallus size and erections. Some trans men have had a vaginectomy or metoidioplasty.

A 2022 study of 141 trans masculine and nonbinary people who had not medically transitioned examined how dysphoria relates to which acts people engage in and enjoy.

Disability belongs here too. Andrew Gurza, a powerchair user with cerebral palsy, calls the label “really affirming” and argues that treating penetration as the ultimate act is ableist. He can top only if a partner rides him, he cannot thrust his hips, he did not enjoy it, and he once felt like a failure for it. “Penetration is not the ultimate sex act in my opinion. Intimacy and vulnerability is.”

Medical causes are ordinary. Kort describes men who become sides after prostate surgery, hemorrhoids or anal fissures. The list also includes phimosis, which prevents topping, and stomas, where bottoming may be dangerous.

Clinicians have a term for pain during receptive anal sex: anodyspareunia. Naming a cause takes most of the shame out of the term, Kort says.

Age and body shape push people the same way. Larry, 44, calls himself big and tall, says that complicates penetration, and calls dropping it freeing.

Many find the word late. Lou, 33, came across it on bateworld.com in 2017 and called it eye-opening, a perfect fit, after years of wondering if he was solosexual.

Not everyone is a never side. Lou does not fully identify as one, and calls himself “sensual over sexual”: “I usually prioritize kissing, touching, mutual masturbation and occasional oral over full-on fucking.” Side vers already makes room for that.

The word has stopped needing a gloss in some rooms. People sort characters by role in conversation and use side without explaining it.

Telling Your Partner You Are a Side, and What Comes Next

Someone just told you they are a side. The first thing that arrives is usually the sound of rejection, not the information. Underneath that reaction is a simpler question: what is a side?

Start with the reframe. Being a side is a preference, and this information is not a verdict. A disclosure is not an exit, and assuming it is forecloses a conversation you have not had.

If you are the one saying it, here is language that works. Lead with what the relationship means to you. State the preference in one clear sentence without burying it in apology, then say you hope it will not change how you feel about each other. Pick a calm hour with no holiday attached.

The order matters: emotional grounding first, the plain statement second, the reassurance third, practical questions last.

Expect three questions, since they arrive nearly every time. Why did you not say sooner? Does this mean you were lying? What happens to us now?

Answer the first two honestly. Postpone the third on purpose. Deciding a relationship’s future while someone is still absorbing the news produces answers nobody believes later.

If you are the one hearing it, concrete moves help more than reassurance. Ask small questions instead of global ones, since asking what you want more of beats asking whether you still want me. Separate listening from agreeing. Agree on a pause word before you need one, and use the framing that you are not trying to win, only to understand.

Then ask the questions that produce information. Is this a fantasy or a need? Is there a specific person? Has anything already happened?

What would change if nothing changed? Could you continue as you are without resentment?

Concrete questions produce answers. Global ones produce panic.

Pace this honestly. A rushed opening decided in weeks almost always fails. Six to twelve months of conversation is a reasonable horizon, and the more hesitant partner sets the speed. The current agreement holds until a new one genuinely exists.

Learn one distinction and the rest gets easier. Boundaries describe your own experience: I will not stay if I feel like a secret. Rules control the other person: you cannot see that person. More boundaries, fewer rules.

Treat jealousy as information rather than a stop sign, and say it out loud instead of managing it in silence. Deciding what to do is a joint project. A therapist’s job here is clarity, not persuasion.

Plan a review instead of pretending one conversation settled it. Look at it together at 30 and 90 days: what surprised each of you, where closeness shifted, what still needs to change, and what support would help.

The outcomes run from small to large. Stay as you are with a wider repertoire. Negotiate specific acts.

Open the relationship in one direction or both. Or discover you genuinely do not fit.

Some sides in long-term relationships kept them open so a top or bottom partner could get what the side did not provide. One warning worth keeping, from a sex therapist: a healthy relationship expands both partners, while an unhealthy one asks one to shrink so it can survive.

Two cases make the range concrete. One advice column handled a man whose partner declared himself a total top, then bottomed for someone else. The columnists noted that such declarations often mean with you rather than ever. The Chinese interviews supply the opposite: two men once assumed incompatible can both use Side, and then it stops being impossible.

Finish on making a yes real. Watch for the coercion signals: doing it if you loved me, asking until someone wears down, calling a no insecurity, arranging a date before agreement. A green light only counts if it is green from both of you.

Being a Side in 2026: Profiles, Apps, and Timing

Sides got an official field in 2022. Where you find one depends on which gay dating app you open.

Grindr added Side as a selectable position in May 2022, alongside top, bottom and vers, and as a search filter at the same time. It remains a first-class option rather than free text. In the Italian interface it reads senza penetrazione.

Two caveats matter. The filter sits behind the paid tier, and the field’s design is still contested from inside the user base, where a feedback thread proposes retiring the hierarchy for neutral insertive and receptive terms.

The change reached roughly four million daily users at rollout, and about 11 million use the app monthly. Four years later, Kort posted about it, calling it “a term I coined” and hoping it “reduces the shame for all sides and legitimizes this way of being intimate.”

Grindr’s 2024 roundup ranked Singapore first for the share of users identifying as a side, followed by the Philippines, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

Elsewhere the option is missing. Scruff’s position field covers top, bottom and versatile plus oral, fetishist and no sex, with filtering behind its paid tier. The word gets used there. It is not built in.

Feeld has no side field at all, so the preference lives in a free-text line or a custom Desire tag. It offers 25 or more Desire tags and 20 or more gender options, so write your own tag in your own words.

3Fun puts the preference in the About us field: free text, built for stating intent and limits in your own words.

Set the field where it exists. Where it does not, say it plainly, because ambiguity reads as evasion and invites the question you wanted to avoid.

Raise it before anything starts rather than mid-encounter, and keep a one-line answer ready for the two reactions that arrive: what is a side, and so you are really a bottom. Filtering narrows the pool. Not filtering wastes evenings.

Sides find each other in more places than the apps. Kort’s Side Guys group passed 8,000 members, and community groups are where many first meet the word.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sides

What does it mean to be a side?

A side is someone who does not enjoy or pursue anal penetration in either role and finds sex in everything else. The shorthand is everything but butt. Dr. Joe Kort, a sex and relationship therapist, coined the term in 2013. It describes preferred acts, not the genders you are attracted to.

What is a side in LGBT terms?

Side sits alongside top, bottom and vers as a role and practice label. It is not a sexual orientation, not a fetish and not a gender. Someone can be a side and also gay, bisexual, trans, nonbinary or anything else.

What is a side in a relationship?

It is a preference one partner has, not a ruling on the couple. In practice it means renegotiating what the two of you do together. Plenty of couples simply widen what they already do, and some open the relationship so a top or bottom partner can get what the other cannot. A disclosure is information, not a verdict.

What is a side in hookup culture?

It is a stated preference on a profile, a ready answer to the top-or-bottom question, and a way to find people who want the same things. That is why having the field in an app matters. Expect two reactions: what is a side, and so you are really a bottom. Raise it before anything starts, not mid-encounter.

A lot of men spend years assuming they are doing gay wrong.
