The Male Term for Pillow Princess, Explained

Someone says it to you across a table, half-smiling, and you cannot tell which half is the joke. Or your partner says it about themselves and moves on, and you let it pass without knowing what you just agreed to.

Here is the answer first. A pillow prince is the male term for a pillow princess: a partner who prefers to receive sexual pleasure rather than give it back. He is not a man who does nothing. He is a man whose pleasure comes from receiving.

The term names a preference, not a personality. What damages relationships is something else: one partner doing all the work in a bed where nobody ever agreed to the arrangement.

Two people are reading this. One has just been called the word and needs to know whether it was meant as an insult. The other is the partner who feels like they are carrying the whole thing, and has not said so yet.

The word has a history, a legitimate use, and a way of going wrong, and they are easy to confuse.

Pillow Prince Meaning: What the Term Actually Describes

The unkind reading of the term is a man who lies there and does nothing. The people who use the word about themselves are precise about the difference.

A pillow prince prefers to receive sexual pleasure and prefers not to give it in return. The preference is the definition. The passivity is a separate idea that got attached later.

Being a bottom is simply liking the receptive role, stated in neutral terms. A pillow queen is sharper: someone who lies back with his feet up and expects to be catered to while someone else does all the work. A pillow prince sits on the preference side of it.

The preference is not indifference either. Summer Tao, writing in Autostraddle in November 2023, puts it plainly: pillow princesses are often very interested in sex, “so interested that we want to communicate our needs clearly.” Disinterest is one of the three myths she most wants dead, alongside lazy and necessarily femme.

The word works as a filter as much as a description. Sex educator Marla Renee Stewart describes people who prefer to be the active partner and who are, in her words, “specifically looking for a pillow princess to make a lover.” Say the word, and the person who wants what you want can find you. That is the whole premise of 3Fun: a profile that states what you are looking for, not just who you will accept.

Stated more plainly, it works as an efficient way to communicate a boundary.

The definition has to work without a default configuration. A gay couple, a bi man dating a woman, a trans man, a non-binary person: the receiving preference is one entry in a shared vocabulary, and that vocabulary has moved between queer communities for roughly eighty years.

The genderless version is still open. Autostraddle floated pillow paramour, cushion companion and bolster beneficiary; other writing offers pillow princex and pillow princet. None has settled, which makes wanting one early rather than wrong.

Negotiated Dynamic vs. Unreciprocated Labor: How to Tell Them Apart

Put the same behavior in two rooms. In one, someone who prefers to receive is with a partner whose pleasure is in giving, and nothing is being taken. In the other, the receiver has stopped noticing that their partner finishes unsatisfied, and nobody agreed to that.

The variable is not effort. It is agreement.

A negotiated dynamic is an arrangement two people named out loud: who initiates, who receives, what is on the table, and what happens if it stops working. Unreciprocated labor is what exists when that conversation never happened: one partner does the work, the other assumes it is the arrangement, and neither said so. Only the second is a problem.

The first is not a loophole. Stone tops take their satisfaction entirely from giving and usually prefer not to be touched in return, so the receiver is not extracting anything.

The counter-case: if the giver gives from obligation rather than desire, the identical acts become labor. The tell is not the act, but whether it is chosen.

The fault line runs between two claims: “it’s what I genuinely want, I shouldn’t be called selfish” and “can you try and make SOME effort.” Neither is unreasonable. The missing agreement is.

The term is not role-locked. A lazy or inconsiderate top can be a pillow queen just as easily. What damages the relationship is the question nobody asked.

Frederick and colleagues surveyed 52,588 US adults and found “usually-always” orgasm rates of 89% for gay men and 88% for bisexual men, against 95% for heterosexual men and 65% for heterosexual women. That gap is far smaller between two male partners, so the claim that this dynamic shortchanges a male giver does not hold. Asking for what you want and praising a partner tracked with higher orgasm frequency: a communication pattern, not a role.

Hosking’s survey of 685 Australian gay men in open relationships found the same shape: men who perceived an imbalance of benefit were less satisfied. A 2025 study of 184 partnered men who have sex with men found it too: the balance of sexual rewards against costs was the strongest single predictor of sexual satisfaction in the model. Perceived imbalance predicts dissatisfaction. Receiving does not.

The agreement is the entire difference, which is why two questions come first: whether the word is an insult, and whether the receiver is lazy.

Is Pillow Prince an Insult? The Honest Answer

The word is contested, and the contest has a history. The evidence that it is not inherently an insult comes first: the m/m dictionary entry dated October 2018 describes the term as said with less disdain and more appreciation within the m/m community than in the w/w community. A French ELLE.be piece describes the male version as carrying a much less pejorative connotation than the female form. And the term is used about oneself in public, as humor rather than injury.

Then the evidence that it lands. The words around it are unambiguously hostile: starfish, dead-fish bottom, mattress queen.

And the register it can arrive in is blunt: “what do u mean ur a pillow prince??? what do u mean u think bottoms can’t jerk off someone else or give oral??” The sting in that is real.

What resolves the contradiction is where the sting came from. Sex educator Marla Renee Stewart’s account is the clearest available: the term began as a neutral descriptor, used by people specifically looking for a partner who would not reciprocate.

It became a pejorative as it moved out of queer space and into heterosexual circles. The insult is imported, not built in, and it grows with distance from the communities that coined the word.

The same word from a partner inside the community reads differently than it does from a stranger. Applied to a public figure, the same word is not about sex at all: one more way to be called it and left confused.

A workable rule: a term used to describe a preference is a description. The same term used to win an argument, end a conversation, or get someone to comply is an insult.

Claiming a label for yourself and assigning it to someone else are different acts. Ask first.

The insult lives in the use. Which leaves the most common justification for it still standing: that he is just lazy.

Why the Lazy Label Is Factually Wrong: Disability, Exertion, and Dysphoria

Summer Tao, writing about her own life, describes herself as “a low-pressure lover who dislikes exertion due to a disability.” One clause, and the lazy framing collapses.

Exertion is a physical cost, and for some people the cost is high, unpredictable, or paid back the next day. Choosing a way to have sex that does not require sustained output is not a moral failing. You make the same accommodation everywhere else in your life.

The cost of the label shows up in the first person: “seeing the vitriol out there about us hurts and made me force myself to cross my own boundaries for years.” A word meant to describe a preference pushed her past her own limits. Let that sit.

Medical reasons run the same way. A writer in Vice stopped bottoming because of a condition causing anal fissures, and Dr. Joe Kort’s work on why men opt out of penetrative roles lists fissures, prostate surgery, phimosis, stomas and hemorrhoids alongside preference. Someone can love receiving and be physically unable to give the way a partner expects.

Then the case that ends the anatomy argument. The iamvanosexual definition allows that discomfort with performing acts “may be caused by dysphoria or similar discomfort with one’s body, but it does not necessarily have to be.”

A common objection holds that the term has no male equivalent, because if two men are having intercourse then both partners are stimulated. That reasoning only reaches cis people. For trans, non-binary and dysphoric people, receiving and giving are not symmetrical experiences, and the objection does not apply.

Do not explain this with trauma. A non-binary stone lesbian who is a survivor of sexual abuse has said on the record that “the assumption that stone-ness is caused by trauma is extremely damaging.” Trauma is one possible factor among several, never the explanation. The lazy explanation and the trauma explanation are both assumptions made from the outside, and both cost the person on the receiving end something.

Sometimes the reason is a preference. Sometimes it is a body. Sometimes it is a history. None of it is visible from the outside, which is why words beat guesses.

Pillow Prince vs. Pillow Princess: Sorting the Whole Vocabulary, from Starfish to Side

Nine words circulate for the same handful of ideas, from different decades and different communities. People use it as a slang synonym, though properly it is a redirect to iamvanosexual, a microlabel under the merosexual umbrella, on the asexual spectrum. Its own definition states that it is not the same thing as being selfish, submissive, or having a sexual preference. Its opposite is placiosexual.

The definitions also contradict one another. The highest-voted dictionary entry for pillow prince, dated December 2011, describes a man with a woman, while others say “gay or strait man” and “usually a homosexual/mlm bottom.” The male form is unsettled enough that asking what it means tends to produce a definition of pillow queen instead.

If the word names a preference, it is a word you can use about yourself. If it names a failure to perform, someone is using it against you.

Where ‘Pillow Prince’ Came From: The Honest Answer, and What ‘Side’ Proves

There is no documented first use of pillow prince. No coinage date, no originating community, no linguistics paper, no journalism that dates it. Saying so beats inventing an etymology.

The parent term has a real chain. Pillow princess came out of the LGBTQ+ community in the 1990s to describe women seeking lesbian experiences, appeared online in 2005, produced a wave of memes in 2019, and spread into heterosexual circles largely through TikTok. Know Your Meme documents that chain in its May 2023 guide, and it dates pillow princess, not pillow prince. For the male form, the record is a single clause in Autostraddle in 2023 and a line in a French ELLE.be piece.

The vocabulary is older than the slang. The scholar Bonnie Zimmerman documents the same idea in use since the 1940s, and Leslie Feinberg’s 1993 novel Stone Butch Blues popularized stone butch.

The ownership question is largely settled: top and bottom were originally gay men’s words too, and terms get adopted across the community. It is not a zero sum game, and the sharpest line is that a man was gatekeeping a gate he never opened.

Then the precedent: the best answer to whether this stays a joke forever. Dr. Joe Kort, a Michigan psychotherapist and Certified Sex Therapist who is himself a gay man, coined side in 2013 to give men a positive identity rather than a set of negations: not a top, not a bottom, not vers. Grindr added Side as a profile option in May 2022. Before that, the only choice for a man who did not want anal was the blunt “no anal.”

The part that lands hardest is why. Kort describes men who “come out as LGBTQ2S+ and find a sense of pride, but have to go back into a closet for being a side,” and calls it coming out erotically, “a lot like coming out a second time.” If you are in that second closet, you are not the first, and there is a word for it.

The same arc is already running here. The parent phrase went from neutral descriptor to dig to wide reclamation to a profile field: the lesbian app HER lets users mark themselves as a pillow princess. Where the masculine form sits is early: no platform field, no settled genderless version.

There is one place to put the words first. A 3Fun profile’s About us field states intent, desires and limits, so someone can read them before either of you says them aloud. Start with yours.

What you do not have is something to say out loud. Don’t perform them.

If you are the one who prefers to receive

“I want to tell you how I like sex, and I’d rather it be a conversation than a confession.”

“Receiving is where I feel the most. It’s not that I’m not interested in you.”

“Here’s what I can give you that isn’t the standard version. Can we talk about what I need?”

“I’ve noticed I often finish unsatisfied, and I don’t want to keep not saying it.”

“I’m not asking you to become someone else. I’m asking us to find the version that works for both of us.”

“I’m not keeping score. I’m asking for something.”

For both of you

“I don’t know how to start this. Can we start it badly together?”

“Let’s check back in a month. Same conversation, no new complaint.”

That is one conversation, not a verdict. The review date turns it into an agreement instead of an apology.

If script eight lands in your lap, don’t panic. It’s an invitation, and the right answer is a question, not a defense.

Raise it outside the bedroom, never during or right after sex, and never mid-argument. Ask for a container: “Could we set aside 20 minutes to talk about how we’re feeling about intimacy?” Lead with the shared problem rather than the personal one.

Skip the guilt, the pressure, the scorekeeping and the shame. As couples therapist Vanessa Cushing puts it, “short-term compliance does not build real intimacy.”

Underneath the lines sits one skill: erotic empathy, which couples therapist Daniel Dashnaw describes as asking and observing rather than guessing. Four questions are worth asking yourself.

Have you asked lately what your partner enjoys? Are you chasing an outcome instead of staying in the process? Do you flinch at feedback? Are you giving emotionally, not only physically?

Your body isn’t the gift. Your attention is.

An agreement is a living thing. Name a review date, expect to revisit it, and treat the second conversation as maintenance rather than a new complaint.

Pillow Prince: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the male term for pillow princess?

Pillow prince. The alternatives are not interchangeable. Pillow queen is sharper and implies being served rather than merely receiving. Accipiosexual, properly iamvanosexual, is a defined asexual-spectrum term rather than a slang synonym.

Pillow princex and pillow princet are attempted gender-neutral forms with very little circulation. What people call it is settled. Where it came from is not.

What is a stone bottom, and how is it different from a pillow prince?

Stone bottom is the umbrella, and pillow prince is one of the most common labels inside it. A stone bottom prefers receiving genital touch and does not give it. A pillow prince is a stone bottom whose preference runs specifically to receiving rather than reciprocating. The umbrella names the structure; the label inside it names the preference.

Can a straight couple have a pillow prince?

The behavior, yes. The label is a borrowing. A dictionary entry dated December 2011 describes a man lying back while a woman does all the work, so the pattern exists in straight couples.

But the word carries queer history, and in straight contexts the same behavior is usually called starfishing. Use it if it fits. Just know you are borrowing a word rather than originating one.

I prefer to receive. Am I selfish?

No. Iamvanosexual, the most precisely defined term in this vocabulary, says so directly: it is not the same thing as being selfish, submissive, or having a sexual preference. The condition is agreement.

A negotiated dynamic is fine. Unreciprocated labor is the thing that damages relationships, and the difference is whether anyone said it out loud. If your partner knows, and has their own say, you are not selfish. You have a preference.

My partner is a pillow prince and I feel like I do all the work. What do I say?

Wait for a calm moment, outside the bedroom, and open with the mutual frame rather than the complaint: “I want sex to be more mutual. Can we talk about what I need?” Ask for a set time instead of starting it in the moment.

Then skip the guilt and the scorekeeping. The Conversation Starter above has the rest. Frame it as access to better sex, not a repair job on your partner.

Someone says it to you across a table, half-smiling, and you cannot tell which half is the joke.
